eLearning Glossary – L, as in...

Welcome to a new edition of our eLearning glossary series! After recently focusing on the letter K, we now continue with the letter L. In today’s digital learning landscape, we encounter numerous specialist terms, some of which appear so frequently that they seem almost self-evident. But what exactly lies behind terms such as Learning & Development, Learning Nuggets, learning formats, clearly formulated learning objectives or an LMS?

Psst… just a little side note: We choose our glossary terms based on the first letter of the original German words. So don’t be surprised if the English version features slightly different terms than the title might suggest.

Learning & Development

Learning & Development (L&D) describes all measures an organisation undertakes to support the professional development of its employees. While traditional approaches often centred on rigid training programmes, L&D today encompasses a much broader range, including:

  • formal training and eLearning courses,
  • workshops and mentoring,
  • informal learning, e.g. articles, podcasts or internal knowledge sharing.

Modern L&D programmes are aligned with the long-term goals of companies and organisations. They foster a culture in which continuous learning is a given. A strategic L&D approach ensures that employees are not only qualified for their current tasks but also prepared for future challenges.

Learning Nuggets

Learning Nuggets, also known as “learning bites”, are intentionally short learning modules that typically last only a few minutes. They are ideal for:

  • quickly refreshing existing knowledge,
  • providing concise explanations of a single aspect of a more complex topic,
  • integrating learning into everyday work.

Typical formats include short videos, mini quizzes or learning sequences. Their brevity makes them perfect for mobile learning and microlearning, two approaches that enable learning anytime and anywhere. Learning Nuggets are therefore a valuable component of modern eLearning strategies.

Learning Format

Choosing the right learning format is essential for effective training. Depending on objectives, target groups and learning content, various methods can be selected.

Synchronous learning formats

  • classroom training
  • workshops
  • live online training

These formats allow direct interaction, spontaneous questions and shared exchange, as they take place in real time.

Asynchronous learning formats

  • eLearning courses
  • videos
  • podcasts
  • learning materials

These formats offer maximum flexibility and are well suited for knowledge transfer at one’s own pace, as they can be completed individually. Factors such as budget, time, didactics, the need for customisation and technical resources also play a role when choosing the appropriate format.

Learning Objective

Before developing an eLearning course or training, clear learning objectives must be defined. These determine:

  • what learners should know at the end,
  • which skills they should be able to apply and
  • to what extent competencies should be developed.

Learning objectives help plan training measures and evaluate their success. The clearer the learning objectives, the more targeted and effective the learning process becomes.

LMS

A Learning Management System (LMS) is the technical foundation of many eLearning programmes. It is a software solution that:

  • provides learning content,
  • manages course enrolments and participation,
  • tracks learning progress,
  • generates reports, evaluations and training certificates.

LMS solutions can vary significantly, from easy-to-use cloud systems to complex platforms with extensive customisation and integration options. An LMS helps organisations structure learning processes and build a central knowledge infrastructure.

Conclusion

The letter L brings with it a wide range of essential eLearning terms, from strategic concepts such as Learning & Development to practical tools like Learning Nuggets or an LMS. Each plays a vital role in making learning processes efficient, flexible and effective.
