eLearning Glossary – H, as in...

In the world of eLearning, there are numerous technical terms relevant to learning platforms, course creation and digital security. Our eLearning glossary helps you keep track. In this edition, we focus on the letter H, from Hacker to HTML5.

Psst… just a little side note: We choose our glossary terms based on the first letter of the original German words. So don’t be surprised if the English version features slightly different terms than the title might suggest.

Hacker

Hackers possess advanced IT expertise and can access or manipulate digital systems. The term is largely seen in a negative light, but there is also a “good” variant: so-called White Hat Hackers test systems for vulnerabilities and security gaps, thus contributing to improved security. However, if hackers pursue destructive motives, data can be stolen or damaged and ransoms demanded to restore access to the data.

Hardware

Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer or digital device, such as the keyboard, hard drive or processor. Hardware forms the basis for the operation of software and data systems. While hardware provides the technical foundation, software enables actual use.

Hovering

“Hovering” (from the English “to hover”) describes an interaction in which the mouse pointer is moved over an element, such as a button or link, without clicking. Often, additional information or options are displayed.

HTML5

HTML5 is the current version of the HTML language. It is used to create and display web content and supports modern eLearning functions such as embedded videos, interactive tasks and mobile-friendly design. HTML5 also ensures improved security and data processing in web applications. HTML documents are displayed in popular browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
