eLearning Glossary – M, as in...
The world of work is evolving faster than ever and with it the way knowledge is delivered. Between data protection, information security, compliance and artificial intelligence, there is hardly any room left for dusty training manuals. What organisations need are solutions that think ahead, grow alongside the business and, ideally, are engaging as well.
In our eLearning glossary series, we explain key terms in a concise, accessible way without unnecessary jargon. Today, it is the turn of the letter M: from Microlearning to Multiple Choice.
Psst… just a little side note: We choose our glossary terms based on the first letter of the original German words. So don’t be surprised if the English version features slightly different terms than the title might suggest.
Microlearning and Micro Content
Microlearning describes a learning strategy in which content is broken down into small units. These so-called “learning nuggets” each focus on a clearly defined learning objective and can be completed quickly and flexibly.
Microlearning is particularly effective:
- as revision or a refresher of existing knowledge,
- for software rollouts or process changes,
- for communicating specific instructions for action, or
- for learning on the go via mobile devices.
Mobile Working
Mobile working enables employees to carry out their duties independently of location, for example from home, while travelling or on a client’s premises. However, this flexibility also brings requirements relating to data protection and information security.
Typical risks associated with mobile working include:
- the use of public Wi-Fi networks,
- accessing sensitive data outside secure corporate environments,
- loss or theft of mobile devices.
It is therefore essential to provide targeted training for employees. Our eLearning course on Mobile Working demonstrates in a practical and sustainable way how information can be kept secure outside the office environment.
Mobile Learning and Mobile Content
Mobile Learning refers to learning via mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops. Learners can access content anytime and anywhere, in the office, while travelling or when working from home.
Advantages of Mobile Learning:
- Learning precisely when knowledge is needed.
- High flexibility and user-friendliness.
- Support for modern ways of working, such as remote work.
- Encouragement of continuous professional development.
Multi-Device eLearning
Multi-Device eLearning means that learning content functions seamlessly across different devices, whether on a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.
Advantages:
- Maximum flexibility for learners
- Access anytime and anywhere
- Higher usage rates and an improved learning experience
- Future-proof delivery of learning content
Technically, this can be achieved through responsive design, whereby content automatically adapts to different screen sizes.
Multiple Choice
Multiple Choice is a commonly used format for knowledge assessment in eLearning. Learners select the correct answer or answers from several predefined options.
A distinction is made between:
- Single Choice: exactly one correct answer, and
- Multiple Choice: several correct answers.
Multiple Choice is particularly suitable for knowledge checks, certifications or compliance training.
Conclusion
The terms in today’s glossary illustrate the direction modern eLearning is taking: away from rigid formats and towards flexible, user-friendly and effective learning concepts.
Microlearning, Mobile Learning and Multi-Device strategies enable organisations to deliver knowledge efficiently and sustainably, particularly in dynamic fields such as data protection, information security, compliance and AI.
Ultimately, it is not just about providing content. It is about empowering people to learn continuously and on equal footing.
