eLearning Glossary – F, as in...

Welcome to the sixth part of our eLearning Glossary series! Today, we turn our attention to the letter F. This instalment is packed with terms that are essential for the development, delivery, and optimisation of digital learning solutions.

Psst… just a little side note: We choose our glossary terms based on the first letter of the original German words. So don’t be surprised if the English version features slightly different terms than the title might suggest.

Feature

A feature refers to a single function or a particular attribute of a piece of software. In eLearning, these might include interactive quizzes, gamification elements, or integrations with other systems.

Feedback

Feedback during the learning process is a crucial factor for learner success. It provides guidance and helps learners understand whether they are on the right track.

Best practice for effective eLearning feedback:

  • Deliver it promptly, ideally immediately after the relevant activity.
  • Avoid introducing entirely new content that is unrelated to the learner’s previous action.
  • Make clear what the real-world consequences of an action would be.
  • When giving negative feedback, phrase it neutrally and with empathy.

Well-designed and well-delivered feedback motivates, corrects, and consolidates knowledge, making it an essential element of any strong eLearning strategy.

First-Level Support

First-Level Support is the initial point of contact for learners with technical issues or organisational queries. In an LMS context, this often covers situations such as “forgotten password”, “course not launching”, or “how to access certificates”.

Flexible Learning

Flexible learning allows learners to decide for themselves the pace, location, or medium of their learning.

This not only offers convenience but also boosts motivation, particularly for those learning alongside their professional commitments. A modern LMS can support this through features such as mobile access, modular course structures, and personalised learning paths.

Training (Fortbildung)

Training refers to further education aimed at expanding specialised knowledge or core competencies. Such training is often undertaken alongside one’s job.

In a digital context, this means being able to participate in courses at any time and from any location. Companies that offer ongoing training not only enhance their workforce’s skills but also strengthen employee engagement and retention.
