NIS-2: Why management must act now – new eLearning course available
With the NIS-2 Directive, cybersecurity becomes a clear responsibility of management. Organisations must be able to demonstrate that risks are understood, measures are initiated and their implementation is monitored. Without appropriate knowledge, meeting these requirements becomes increasingly difficult.
At the same time, cyberattacks are becoming more targeted, more professional and more economically damaging. This creates an urgent need for action for many organisations, particularly if they fall within the scope of NIS-2. This generally applies to organisations that: operate in one of the eighteen defined sectors; employ more than fifty staff; and exceed an annual turnover or balance sheet total of ten million euros.
If this is the case, information security becomes a management responsibility and therefore a matter for the leadership team.
Why NIS-2 is particularly relevant now
“NIS” stands for “Network and Information Security”. With the NIS-2 Directive, the number of affected organisations increases significantly. In addition to critical infrastructure, many medium-sized organisations will also fall under the requirements, particularly in sectors such as energy, transport, health, digital infrastructure and research.
Particularly important to note:
- Responsibility is explicitly assigned to management.
- New documentation and organisational obligations arise.
- Significant sanctions may apply in case of non-compliance.
- Training for the management level is explicitly expected.
This means management teams must actively address cyber risks, risk management and governance, while time at leadership level remains limited.
